Dedham Vale AONB

A large part of the village of Little Horkesley is within the boundaries of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There are some 30 AONBs in the United Kingdom and ours is one of the smallest although of national and international importance due to its links to John Constable.

The management of the area is the responsibility of the Dedham Vale AONB & Stour Valley Project which is charged with the protection, and enhancement of the countryside.
Their funding derives from national government, Essex and Suffolk County Councils and six Borough and District Councils included in the AONB. Like all government funded organisations, the Project has had its funding reduced and to minimise management costs their remit now includes the Suffolk Coastal AONB.

The Project undertakes a whole range of activities in their drive to enhance the area but also to educate and inform people on what is happening in the countryside. Educational programmes for both children and adults are important and one very successful archaeological exercise conducted in recent years helped to explore the thousands of years of history below our feet.

The Project seeks to protect  wildlife, enhance the Stour river basin and fight the perpetual battle against non-native invasive species which threaten local wildlife along the Stour. The Project manages the thousands of hours of voluntary time contributed by many across the area who make a major contribution to the countryside we know and love.
